We got a spicy new Shimmering Skies card reveal from the lads over at Podcana Podcast. They have revealed the second Sapphire Legendary from the fifth set of Disney Lorcana, this 8-cost Mufasa - Ruler of Pride Rock.
Card Evaluation
This is a very cool and unique card. It represents the first time we've seen recursion that pulls cards from your inkwell back to your hand. It's essentially negative ramp, but you gain a bit of card advantage. Losing valuable ink from your inkwell can be punishing, so you will definitely want a lot of ramp to get this Mufasa out quickly and then regain the ink lost, after you've played him.
Once he's on the board, he is a massive threat. Not only is he questing for 4 lore, but he effectively doubles the amount of ink you have to spend each turn. You will very quickly pull ahead of your opponent in tempo with this Mufasa on the loose.
He will, of course, need to survive a turn for his second ability to come into play. But at 4 Strength, he has the perfect number to dodge Madame Medusa - The Boss and World's Greatest Criminal Mind. And 9 Willpower is a lot to deal with for damage-based removal. The only efficient options for removing him will be hard removal like Dragon Fire and Let It Go. Bounce removal, such as We Don't Talk About Bruno, can also take care of him and might be his biggest threat. Sending Mufasa back to hand is extra punishing when you have to sacrifice ink to play him again.
But, all that being said, he's a massive threat that demands immediate removal and, if your opponent doesn't have it, will quickly close out a game. We've been asking for big Sapphire bombs, as payoff for all that ramp, for a while now and 005-150 is certainly that.
