As new cards get revealed from the next Disney Lorcana set, it's always exciting to see the new Legendary cards. These are often the most powerful and most sought after cards from a new set. Today we'll be looking at two Legendaries from Shimmering Skies that were revealed over the past week, an Amethyst Genie and Steel Arthur.
Card Evaluations
Love seeing the Legendary cards from each set and evaluating what sort of impact they may have. Legendaries generally seem to be pretty polarizing where they are either very impactful and powerful cards or they just never see any play. Which side of the fence will these two cards fall on?
The Genie, for those of you that don't read German, has the ability "SPECTACULAR ENTERTAINER Whenever this character is exerted, your opponents can not ready their characters at the start of their turn." That's a very powerful ability. You are basically locking your opponent out from doing much of anything for a turn. No questing, no singing, no challenging.
Well, unless they have a Rush character in hand. And unfortunately, Rush characters are fairly prevalent in the meta, especially Maui - Hero to All. The other problem is it is a 7-cost uninkable card that doesn't do anything the turn it is played. Yes, you could setup some shenanigans with 003-039, and try to exert Genie right when you play him, but that is probably not going to be very reliable. It's a powerful effect, for sure, and worthy of being on a Legendary, but I think it will prove too unreliable to see serious play.
Arthur as king makes his debut in Lorcana as one of Steel's Legendaries this set. Once again, we are looking at an uninkable card but this one is Shiftable and, more importantly, does something the turn he is played. Giving something the ability to challenge ready characters and survive the challenge is quite good. It's also notable that it it doesn't say "other" character, so you could even target Arthur himself with this ability. Obviously, only relevant if you are Shifting him out and he can challenge right away, but it is interesting to note.
I think this card has potential. The one drawback is his value is conditional on having something else on board already, either another Arthur to shift onto or another character that can challenge. He's not a card that you can just slam down no matter the board state and feel good about it. That probably limits his upside quite a bit and, as a result, if he sees play, it's probably as a 1 or 2-of in select decks.
