Card Evaluations

Ok, let's do some quick card evals:

  • Boss's Orders is Work Together in Amber. That card wasn't good and neither will this one be.
  • Mr. Smee is a 2-cost 3/3 for Steel. We know from Madam Mim - Snake that that is a good stat line. And he even has 2 lore. Yeha, he pings himself down after three turns, if you have no Captains on board, but you will get plenty of value off of him before then. A very good card for aggressive decks.
  • Geo is more item recursion for Sapphire. I would say he is not as good as Nick Wilde - Wily Fox but if you want to recur items other than Pawpsicle, he's not a bad option.
  • Maui - Whale is meant to be a kind of board clear, you can play him and on the following turn, you challenge something and then can pay 2 ink to ready him and challenge again, and again, and again. He works sort of like a Scar - Vicious Cheater in that sense. Problem is he is very slow and very expensive, as he does nothing the turn he comes down, and then you are having to pay extra ink each time to ready him. Probably not worth it.
  • The Legendary Maleficent is a nice card draw card for Amethyst. She reminds me a bit of The Queen - Wicked and Vain except you get the card draw from questing, as opposed to in lieu of questing. That's arguably better but her 2/3 body means she is not going to stick around on the board for long. And I'm not sure how to evaluate her damage moving ability. There are definitely situations it will be useful, but it does feel pretty niche. All in all, not the worst Legendary card but nothing meta-defining.
  • Then we have the two Brooms. The 6-cost Broom feels very expensive for what it does. Yes, Elsa - Spirit of Winter is a powerful card but she can close out games with the combination of her ability and lore. This Broom won't be doing that, it's more a stall tactic, and it's situational. The other Broom seems much better. A 4/4 Rush is already quite good and being able to recur all your other Brooms will be key to keep your broom engine running. Either way, if the broom deck takes off, you are probably running both of these.
  • A 2-cost inkable song that banishes an item? Break in shambles.
  • Steel gets yet another Simba card. This one costs 7 ink, which is expensive, but he does something as soon as he comes down unlike the other Steel Simbas, Simba - Rightful King and Simba - Rightful Heir. And then you can get more value off of him on your next turn, if he sticks around and can challenge and banish something. Good card.
  • Zazu is a nice early game card card for aggressive location decks. Ideally, you will have a way to get him to a location for free, but even if you need to spend 1 ink to do it on turn 2, it's not the worst. Going location on turn 1, Zazu and move him on turn 2 puts out two threats generating 3 lore total for you, which isn't bad.
  • Kida is the first Amber Legendary card we've seen from this set.. and probably the worst Legendary Amber has gotten yet. Her ability affects ALL characters including your own and including herself. So this isn't setting up any value trades for you. Also, her ability does NOT effect characters that aren't on the board when you play her. That means if your opponent has any Rush characters, they get to play them next turn and rush them into your stuff and take very little or even zero damage in return. And guess what the best decks in the meta are playing? A lot of Rush characters. I don't think she's it. The art is amazing though.
